What Is Class 2 Road Base?
Class 2 road base is crushed aggregate blended with fines so it compacts into a dense, load-bearing layer. The rock is angular instead of rounded, so the pieces lock together under a plate compactor or roller rather than rolling out from under a tire. The fines fill the voids between the larger pieces, which is what turns a loose pile of rock into a surface that carries weight.
That is the difference between base rock and decorative gravel. Rounded landscape rock stays loose forever and sinks into soft soil. Compactable base holds its shape, sheds water, and keeps a driveway or farm road usable through a wet Central Valley winter.

Fixing a Muddy Driveway or Farm Road
Central Valley clay soil is the problem. It holds water instead of draining it, so after a few days of rain a dirt drive turns into ruts and standing mud, and every pass of a truck makes it worse. Dumping rounded gravel on top does not fix it. The rock presses into the soft ground and vanishes, and you are back to mud the next season. What works is a compacted layer of angular base rock that bridges the soft soil and gives tires a firm surface to ride on.
If rain has already made the road impassable, that is exactly when to call. We can often get a load of base rock out the same day through our material delivery service, or load your truck or a rented dump trailer at the yard so you can start on the worst spots yourself.
Ag, Orchard & Farm Road Stabilization
Farm and orchard roads carry loads that a residential driveway never sees: loaded trailers, tractors, spray rigs, and harvest trucks running the same lanes over and over. When those lanes soften, work stops. Ag road rock delivery is a large share of what our trucks do between fall and spring, and the fix is the same idea scaled up, a deeper compacted base with drainage that actually moves water off the road.
For orchard road base material we usually recommend 6 to 8 inches of 3/4" base rock in the main lanes, with asphalt grindings as a cost-effective option on long runs between blocks. Crowning the road and keeping the shoulders clear matters as much as the rock itself, since water trapped alongside a lane will undermine it from the edges in.
We deliver by the truckload throughout Fresno County and can spread a load along a lane rather than dropping it in one pile where access allows. Growers and ag operators buying repeat loads should look at our contractor and ag program for volume pricing, priority delivery, and Net-30 terms.
How Much Road Base Do You Need?
Base rock is sold by the ton. One ton of 3/4" base rock covers roughly 120 square feet at 2 inches deep, so a driveway needing 4 inches of compacted base takes about one ton for every 60 square feet. A 12-foot by 100-foot drive works out to approximately 20 tons. Farm roads at 6 to 8 inches deep need about double that per foot of road.
Order a little more than the math says. Base compacts down as you roll it, and the ruts you are filling take extra material. Running short mid-job means a second delivery fee.
